I originally had the idea to do a podcast back in 2006 and it only took 10 years to get it going. Like most people I started listening to This Week in Tech (Twit). I owned a cigar shop at the time and several of my regular customers would come in and talk about their garage music studio. They talked about their equipment and how easy it was to set up. I really enjoyed hearing the “how” they did everything. So I got a microphone and tried to do a podcast, and it sucked really bad. I never let anyone hear anything I recorded. And I went back to just listening to podcasts.

C(1)I download and listen to podcasts every day. I probably listen to an average of two a day. Yes, I might need to go to a podcast anonymous meeting or something. And I like to hear a variety of podcasts. I like the intro, the body, how they fit in advertisements, and how they end the podcast. For me it is very much the “how” of the podcast that I enjoy. I can listen to a podcast without knowing the ranking, and I can guess very close.

So where did the idea of PodcastingLab originate. It all started a few years ago with Kym and I on a road trip. I was writing a book called Happy Wife Happy Life, A Marriage Book for Men That Doesn’t Suck. So I downloaded a few writing podcasts for myself, and I downloaded a few travel podcasts I thought she might like. Well, she hated them all. I felt really bad because they all were really horrible. I was afraid she would hate podcasts forever. But the last podcast was so bad it was funny. It was a travel podcast with a parrot obviously in the room. The podcaster was trying to over talk the parrot and it sounded like a competition he wasn’t going to win. Every time the podcaster would start to talk, the parrot would start squawking. When the podcaster would stop, the parrot would stop. We laughed so hard our faces hurt. So then we started going back through the podcasts and reviewing them. There was one that sounded like a 40ish year old man. He was talking about his travels to Costa Rica. And then you can hear someone yell something and he yells back “In just a minute, I’m busy”. I have no idea why he didn’t edit this out. Perhaps he didn’t know how to edit. But Kym started laughing that it was probably his Mother. That he probably lived in his parent’s basement and it was time for her sponge bath. After that we started downloading and reviewing podcasts often.

We really like picking out the best podcasts. There are some hidden gems waiting to be discovered. And we want to discover those podcasts.

I like to review good podcasts and learn from the best, while Kym likes to poke sticks at bad podcasts. So together we make a great team. Kym is not just my beautiful wife. She is my partner.

So please enjoy our podcast 🙂
